Who loves summer? (I honestly do!)

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Hi Everybody!

I’m back and I have an important question:  Who loves summer?  I honestly do.  It’s so much fun to swim and spend time outside (which for me includes lots of hiking!)  I also like summer because I get to do lots of reading, and one of the things I just read is the new Mallory book, Honestly, Mallory!  (You can have a sneak peak at the cover if you look at the bottom of this post.)

In Honestly, Mallory!, Mallory tells a little lie that gets big before she can stop it.  (I hope nothing like this has ever happened to you!) I can’t tell you what happens to Mallory when she tells a lie, but let’s just say that she has a lot of explaining to do!  I hope you’ll read the book to find out what happens.

In case you’re wondering why I read the books I write, I’ll tell you.  I re-read the Mallory books all of the time so I remember every little detail of what I wrote.  No one is testing me (although kids ask me lots of questions when I go on school visits!), but when I write about Mallory, I like to be consistent.  I wouldn’t want to say she has red hair in one book and she’s a blond in another.  That’s kind of obvious, isn’t it?  But I like to make sure all of the little things stay the same.  For example, Mom and Dad call her “Sweet Potato.” I wouldn’t want to slip and write “Pickled Tomato!”

That’s it for today.  Thanks so much to all of you who have written in.  I’m glad you like the Mallory books.  I like reading what you have to say!

Talk to you soon!

I’m back (and I brought a friend!)

Hi Everybody!

I’m back and I brought a friend.  This is my dog, Ollie.  He’s a 3-year old Bichon Frise and a huge helper when it comes to writing the Mallory books.  You’re probably wondering how in the world a dog can help me write books, so I’ll tell you.

I start every morning with a long walk with Ollie and that’s when I do most of my thinking about what’s going to happen to Mallory.  I don’t think I’d be able to think up nearly as much stuff as I do if Ollie didn’t make me walk as far as he does.  He’s a little dog, but he can go a long way!

When we’re done with our walk, Ollie goes to sleep in a chair in my office and I sit down at my computer and start writing about Mallory.

OK.  Time to go walk Ollie.

Talk to you soon!

Hi Everyone!

I’m Laurie Friedman, creator of the Mallory series, and this is my blog.  I’ll be telling you a little bit about myself, what it’s like to be a writer, and keeping you up to date on what’s happening with Mallory.   I’m super excited to be here and super excited that you’re here too!

If you’re not 100% sure what a blog is, I’ll tell you.  A blog is a lot like a journal except there are two BIG differences:

BIG difference #1:  When you keep a journal, you put your thoughts in a book with pens and markers.  When you keep a blog, you just click on your computer and start typing.

BIG difference #2:  When you keep a journal, you usually keep it  hidden away because you don’t want anyone to read what you’ve written.  But a blog is totally different, and especially this blog.

I want you to read what I’ve written and I want you to write back.  It’s super easy to do.  If you want to respond to my posts (blog lingo for “what I’ve written”), all you have to do is scroll to the bottom of this entry and click on “Post a comment.”  You will be taken to a new page where you can reply to my blog entires!

I hope you’ll write in because I’d love to hear from you!  I’ll post a lot of your comments on the blog and try to answer as many of your questions as I can.

I’ll be posting (which means writing something new on the blog and answering your questions) at least once a week.  I hope you’ll check in to see what’s new and what kids from all over have to say.

Talk to you soon!

Laurie Friedman
